We have reasons to believe a telephone scam that targets unsuspecting members of local churches may be underway in Peterborough.

The caller says that he is calling on behalf of a person's church. He explains that the church has incurred damage to its building and that he is raising funds on behalf of the church to repair the damage.

St Luke's has incurred no property damage and there is no effort underway to raise funds to offset property damages nor is there any other fundraising campaign underway for any reason.

If you receive a call similar to this description, the call is a scam. Hang up. You may report the scam to the authorities by following steps recommended by the Peterborough Police.

The Peterborough Police focuses on fraud crime reduction through various proactive crime prevention strategies including: targeting organized crime groups, education, training and public outreach.

The Peterborough Police website states: "If you have received a fraudulent phone call/email/communication and have not provided any personal information or lost any money, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or their online reporting system to file a report for statistical purposes".

For further information or if you have provided information to a fraudulent caller, please visit the Peterborough Police website for additional actions to take.

If you receive a telephone call similar to the example described, please also notify the parish office.

Have any St Luke parishioners received any such calls?

      Hi Beth,

Yes, one. That’s how we know. The caller would have been “phishing” for specific name of parish.
